HISTORY

Located less than a mile from LSU's campus on Highland Road, El Bengal Tailor has been family-run for more than four decades.

In 1972, Oscar Reyes’ father, started the business to create a better life for his family, who still lived over a thousand miles away in El Salvador.

“I learned from the best. He was a true tailor. He would make suits from scratch,” said Reyes. He developed an appreciation for tailoring at a young age after watching his father construct all of his clothes for him – pants, shirts, even his tuxedos.

“My father passed away in ‘92, and ever since then I have kept the business going myself,” said Reyes. “It’s a tradition that’s kind of dying. Not a lot of people are doing it. It’s something that I am proud to be continuing.”

Inside Reyes' shop, he carefully and unrelentingly works on his diverse clients’ garments and has been for more than two decades as the owner of El Bengal Tailor.

Today, like his father, Reyes works on all different types of clothing for all walks of life. Businessmen and women, university students, local sports teams and band members give Reyes their garments; and, even brides trust him with their delicate dresses.

Reyes' shop displays numerous photographs and memories of past and present clients, many of whom are frequent and loyal customers that through the years Reyes has developed unique bonds with.

Reyes' number one priority is to ensure that his customers are completely satisfied with the fit and appearance of their garments.
